Update 1/1/2024

International NEM/Symbol community members

What is your impression of NEM/Symbol?
While the development of NEM/Symbol by the Japanese community is active and well known, the excitement is often reported, we also see people saying that it is not well known outside of Japan.
For NEM/Symbol to become a blockchain that is known and used around the world, we need the help of community members who are active not only in Japan but around the world.
So, the Japanese community had interviewed active members outside Japan about their thoughts on NEM/Symbol and their daily contributions.
We hope that everyone around the world will take this opportunity to get to know the NEM/Symbol community members and deepen their friendship.

Let's get acquainted
My name is Angel NEM, and I've been living in XYM City since its inception, by the way, it's in Japan, but I'm from Italy! Therefore, I fly around the world and love it! I grew up in a good family! My parents raised me quite strictly and instilled responsibility, diligence, family values and the desire for a prosperous life.
The strictness and attentiveness of the father were ideally combined with the unconditional love of the mother. I am sure that it is no accident that we are born in a certain family and geographical location. All circumstances are sharpened to ensure that a person most fully reveals his potential and realizes himself as a person. I thank Life for everything that was, is and will be. I have many interesting hobbies, for example, I love horses and equestrian sports (horseback riding), skydiving, I think these sports have tempered my character! Living in Italy, I was interested in culture, good and healthy food and high fashion since childhood. I have been fond of computers since childhood! I love music and drawing, dancing and learning languages, singing songs, these are my main hobbies to which I pay maximum attention. I especially dedicate myself to creativity on weekends. But if I am interested in something new, then I will definitely try myself in this.

What kind of activities do you do for NEM/Symbol?

From 2017 to 2018, I was the editor of the NemNews site, and also created various videos, such as this video
From 2020 to 2021, I was the community manager helping with translations and many other tasks, as well as helping launch Symbol in March 2021.
We (myself and the Klim) launched the SymbolTimes project where we interview various developers, write various articles about NEM/Symbol, and do translations from Japanese into English and Russian,Italian. Therefore, if you want to be aware of exclusive information about the project, go to our discord

How did you come to know about NEM/Symbol?

I learned about NEM in 2017 via coinmarketcap.

What are your thoughts on NEM/Symbol?

I know that NEM/Symbol has a huge technical potential, it's just that not many people know about NEM/Symbol right now, so let's do our best to let more people know about NEM/Symbol. Strong Core Devs who go the extra mile for the project and guide us in the right direction. We take an example from them and improve our knowledge every day, despite the difficulties, we go to the light of a star named Symbol. From the very beginning of the birth of NEM, I knew that this is the best blockchain in the world.

Could you give a message to the Japanese community members?

I love Japanese culture and Japanese cuisine, I admire the Japanese Symbol community and have great respect for each of our XYM City residents, we have true friends in Japan who are always there and ready to help if necessary, we appreciate this friendship and are proud, that's why we launched SymbolTimes, to distribute Symbol information outside of Japan. How did you come to know about NEM/Symbol?

Saw a hacker news in 2018 and then got a deeper understanding of everything about NEM, the NEM blockchain is a full-featured enterprise-grade blockchain solution that provides simple APIs to interact with external systems, effectively driving enterprise Progressive program. Its core design includes a unique digital asset design with strong application flexibility in a variety of scenarios. These capabilities include a decentralized operating model in a distributed deployment environment, intrusion immunity, fraud prevention. Symbol/XYM is the airdrop of NEM/XEM at that time

What are your thoughts on NEM/Symbol?

I always think that NEM/Symbol has a very good future (the Japanese community is doing very well), any blockchain ecosystem support needs community development, it is really bad when only focusing on technology and ignoring the voice of the community, the current international Trends suck, bear markets don't look at price, it's right to look at technology, but bull markets tend to be price above everything rather than technical development

Could you give a message to the Japanese community members?

Why I jumped in Blockchain

I first encountered blockchain in 2014. I liked to build my own world, so when I was in college, I majored in computer science, but I used to take classes in the game department together. In the meantime, I found out about the technology that allows you to conduct electronic transactions without a trusted institution (bank), and I fell in love with it because I thought it would help me to build my own world. It was 2018 when I was immersed in technology research in earnest, and I did research in graduate school on improving the block consensus / query speed by proposing a transaction scheme in a lightweight blockchain platform used in the IoT environment.

Why is it a NEM & Symbol among so many blockchains?

What I found while researching blockchain was that it was too complex. In order to implement the core functions of the blockchain, a Smart Contract is written and a large fee is paid to distribute it, and since it is a Smart Contract created by a person, a hacking incident (like the DAO of the Ethereum...) I felt bad about what was happening. So I became more interested in Symbol without EVM. Multi-signature, Mosaic, Namespace, Aggregation Tx, etc... I was very impressed with the fact that you can use the functions of the blockchain even if you are not a developer. This is because we thought that non-development personnel would easily participate in the platform and create many services.

What kind of activities do you do for NEM & Symbol?

I don't have a lot of activity because I can't invest all of my time due to military service, but I'm going to summarize some activities.

NEM & Symbol Korea coummnity & Node operation (called XYMForus)

Currently, we are running a Korean community called XYMForus (NEM & Symbol for us). We have not yet made the main page, and we are working with community members through notion and kakao-talk.
If I get to work a little more seriously in the future, I plan to expand the community and start marketing in earnest.
So, we are also running a node for the community. (https://xym0.kalee.land:3001)

Localization of Symbol based services

I translated Symbol based services such as desktop-wallet, Arcana, SSS-Extension and QUEST into Korean, and supported the use of Symbol based services in Korea. I haven't been able to attract many Korean users due to lack of marketing yet, but we plan to do our best to promote it in the future.
Currently, we are working on a Korean translation of the symbol-community web service.

Blockchain Education

It has not been decided, but I am going to give a special lecture (or regular education course) on blockchain at the university I graduated from, Dongseo Univ.. Since the part has not been decided yet, it has not been officially spread to the community, but lecture materials are being produced. (This part will be released when production is complete, in PPT format)

NEM & Symbol Marketing

On-line

Currently, active on Twitter under the name of Karriz, and is working to promote and RT the contents of various Symbol in Korea.
In addition, various Symbol news and technical contents are disseminated in KALog(キャルログ).

Off-line

As a recent activity, I participated in UDC2022, listened to sessions, participated in a networking dinner, and talked with various people who are participating in the blockchain ecosystem.
In particular, by asking questions during the DAO session and talking to other ecosystem participants about DAO, we were able to learn about the important parts and what people think of the important points of DAO.

How did you come to know about NEM/Symbol?

As I use Java as my main develope language, I naturally came to know about the blockchain NEM made in the Java language, and I wanted to develop my own blockchain core based on it. However, while I had only completing the development of the core that can educate the blockchain(https://github.com/karriz-dev/fairy).And then I heard the news that finished developing the technology for Symbol. Since then, I have been continuously studying Symbol and thinking about ways to use them.

What are your thoughts on NEM/Symbol?

DAO

First of all, I think DAO should work normally. Originally, I thought the community would grow naturally as QF(Qudratic Funding) launched at the beginning of the year and funds circulated, but now I'm worried that I haven't heard of QF at all. Funding is essential for the development of the community, and core committee members are needed to find and attract projects that can be funded with the ecosystem. If this is not done, the community will gradually lose its power, and it is certain that the ecosystem will be adversely affected. As many people are interested in DAO right now, I hope that DAO will work successfully.

Game-Fi

In 2022, the gaming market is growing tremendously. In the past, gamers were treated as Nerds, but now celebrities and influencers are also enjoying the game a lot. In my opinion, Symbol needs to invest a lot in Game-Fi to survive. In the case of Japan, the content production capacity is not inferior to any other country.(Like Nintendo or Sega) So I want to push this Game-Fi part. I also plan to work on a game project with DAO after the military service is over.

5 years in the future

However, the symbol is not a dead project, the syndicate team is hard at work, and the community is working hard to revitalize the community.
I hope that in 5 years, everyone will be able to gather together and have a pleasant gathering together with drinks and delicious food by renting a luxury hotel.
We are also looking forward to Symbol 2.0 (with NEM). I hope the community flows in a good direction.

Could you give a message to the Japanese community members?

Currently, the image of NEM & Symbol in Korea is not very good. Whenever I introduce Symbol to people around me, they say that they are too Japanese-centric and have no idea why they should use (or invest) in Symbol in Korea. The main reasons for this are the poor marketing of Symbol and the low number of users. With a simple comparison with other blockchains, Symbol is operating a really small community and service.
We can see that many of the early community members have left. and to the leaving community, somebody told them to sell and leave if they weren't going to contribute. (In Korea, there was even a rumor that Symbol core team was eat and run when Hatchet stopped Twitter.) In order to change this past image, many people have to work hard on marketing. The easiest way to do this is as I said before, I think Game-Fi can do the job.
Japan Coummnity's content productivity + Symbol's technology = Fun & easy-to-use Blockchain based game service
I think it could be.(Digimon or Pokemon made from a mosaic of Symbol ? ワクワク)
So, rather than relying on Korean, I want to create a structure where people from all over the world can participate as well as in Japan by implementing the service explosively with Japanese community members and making it a global service. (The reason why we want to organize DAO first)
Although it will take a long time for the symbol-community to grow (at least 3 years), I am going to believe in the technology that Symbol has and the Japanese community's ability to produce content.

Please introduce yourself.

I’m Leon from America. I am interested in more things than I can list, but they usually involve history, philosophy, economics, and physics. Crypto is the perfect combination of all 4.
I have been interested in economics since a very young age. I wanted to know “What is Money?”
I read as much as I could, and made presentations about fiat currencies, central banks, and compound interest. For a school project I created my own paper currency that was backed by pork.
I was also interested in several early alternative currency communities such as Ripplepay (before it became a crypto), Listia, and various trade/barter exchanges that used centralized ledgers and mutual credit.
Bitcoin and crypto solves all the problems previous projects failed to overcome.
Before bitcoin I worked doing computer repair, ecommerce, sales, forestry, and building trades.
Currently, I operate a pleb mining farm that uses renewable energy and recycles the heat.
I enjoy time with my kids, stand up comedy, growing the world's hottest peppers, reading, writing, research, debate, poetry, swimming, sauna, stargazing, stunt driving, and cigars by a campfire.

What kind of activities do you do for NEM/Symbol?

It’s complicated, and this question ties in with the next one. I will try to explain how I got involved, the activities I became involved with, and what I am doing today.
I never intended to get involved, life just guided me that way.
My crypto journey started with mining BTC.
When clone coins became popular, I was intrigued by people that built things that weren’t simply clones of Bitcoin. I had minor involvement with many miscellaneous projects. Those were wild days on bitcointalk forum, so I don’t remember exactly how I was introduced to NEM, but it was research and reading the NEM Forum comments by Jag and others that made me a true believer.
I didn’t become active in the community until the Coincheck hack. The hack intrigued me, so I tracked transactions and contacted different exchanges and gateways informing them that stolen XEM was being laundered through their systems.
Around this time I became more active in the community, and some community members recruited me to write documentation and assist them with application to the NEM Community Fund.
That was my first introduction to the NEM Community Fund (NCF), and in the process of helping them, I realized there were many problems with the processes.
I began writing suggested improvements. The NCF Committee then invited me to join them as a volunteer to review projects in the pipeline.
It’s a long story, but I discovered numerous problems within the committee that resulted in large amounts of XEM being issued to unviable projects.
I was motivated to stop it, which upset a lot of people, and earned me the title “NEM Bur”.
While on the NCF Committee I was also volunteering on Telegram: answering questions, assisting in helpdesk, directing inquiries, and connecting people. I was then invited to become a community moderator.
As the most active admin, I received the majority of outreach: Support requests, business inquiries, marketing proposals, opinions, suggestions, complaints, etc. Because of this, it was necessary I communicate with leadership teams, and that segwayed me into working with NGL.
I worked with NGL briefly in 2021. When Hatchet raised the alarm to the poor behavior and wasteful spending within NEM entities, I tried to help as best I could to alert and motivate the community to fork.

How did you come to know about NEM/Symbol?

Answered above.

What are your thoughts on NEM/Symbol?

It’s a love-hate relationship.
The Love:
I love the active community, the Pirate team, the Symbol Vision, and the adherence to important Satoshi principles. I love prioritization of decentralization, multi-layer multisig, cross chain interoperability, and the unique community projects that are finding ways to leverage the protocol design to create utility for end users.
I love low inflation, fixed total supply, liquid staking, smoothed halfings, auto compounding, dumb contracts, low barrier to entry, and ability to scale in a decentralized manner.
I am very excited for Symbol and NEM. I hope to grow the hashrate of my farm and leverage it to support Symbol in the sub-chain future.
  The Hate:
Over the years I’ve been through a lot of drama. There’s a lot of history with Foundations, NGL, NCF, legal threats, community disputes, and the fork.
I have benefited nothing, but some are unappreciative.
What’s most disappointing is the disrespect and discontent some have for developers. They have made much greater contributions and sacrifices than me, have been more effective, and never took the opportunity to rugpull.
None of us would even exist as a NEM or Symbol community member without the developers that build the things!
More Love:
Fortunately, I think we are making progress. As a community, we are becoming more wary, more learned in blockchain, and more understanding of the Symbol Vision.
We have a lot of pain behind us, and the future looks bright! With the weeds pulled, the garden can flourish.

Could you give a message to the Japanese community members?

Please support developers and active community members! Please don’t support vultures that are looking to extract value from our community and move it to an external ecosystem!
How about supporting developers and those who constructively active community members together? I would like to support such active members. Creating value is a virtuous circle for the ecosystem!
Proof Of Stake consensus requires the community to verify Proof Of Work instead of machine verification, as in POW consensus.
We need to support those people that have verifiable Proof Of Work.
Verifiable work is things such as: development, integrations, writing, translation, art, videos, hosting events, participation in discussions, and things that require real work to be done.
Work requires a sacrifice of time, energy, or money. Holding a token, giving kickbacks, and other low-effort actions in pursuit of personal gain is not a sacrifice. Doing something concrete requires a sacrifice of time, energy and sometimes financial outlay. So I would like to support people who are making a contribution to the whole ecosystem.
Block Rewards are like a “DAO”. Your delegation is your vote. Who you choose to delegate to is your vote on the direction of the ecosystem.
Please delegate to those that work, those that improve the network infrastructure with local and bare metal nodes, and those that make use of the dApps built upon it.
Our nodes and our delegations are critical to maintain a healthy and functional ecosystem flywheel.
You (Japan) are the beating heart of the Symbol ecosystem. The international communities know that, and are here to support you.
In order for us to be effective at expanding Japanese projects to the West, we need to tailor a version of our words and work to appeal to western audiences. There needs to be tolerance for other cultures, even if we don’t understand them.
As a whole, the community shares the same love for Symbol, we share this crypto culture. That should be uniting!
If we reject the culture and mannerisms of someone, they won’t be able to convince their family and friends that share the same culture and language.
We cannot onboard a new user to an application if the user interface, translations, and theme is unfitting for the audience.
To achieve international adoption we have to work extra hard to collaborate, and have extra patience when reading translated material.
I am here to work for you and with you. I want to help.
I would LOVE to be able to show off every Japanese project to my American friends, have them understand, and see the value.
Someday I hope to travel to Japan, meet you, and pay for everything with XEM & XYM at all the businesses you have onboarded!
I hope the history I’ve described above is enough Verifiable Proof Of Work that you don’t need to trust me. Don’t Trust, Verify.
Life is short. Let’s make the best of the time we’ve got. Let’s disrupt the status quo and make a positive impact on the world.
We are the New Economy Movement.
Thank you for everything!

Greetings! I'm Oris Dorch - your friendly neighborhood wizard! Sometimes I wonder whether the 'wizard' part refers to being wise or wizened (wizen: to become dry, shrunken, and wrinkled often as a result of aging or of failing vitality) . I don't feel much need to talk about myself, but I will say that I have many years of experience working on enterprise business systems in a variety of roles (system implementation, upgrades, optimization/redesign/improvement, maintenance, administration, analysis, reporting, design, testing, process design, project management, etc.).

How did you come to know about NEM/Symbol?

I was one of the very first 'Stakeholders' back when NEM was just an idea. I used to spend a lot of time on the old bitcointalk forums back in 2013-14. I enjoyed learning about the many experiments going on in the Altcoin space, and came across NEM there.. NEM largely started as an objection to NXT's distribution model, which allocated 100% of all NXT to 73 wallets. NEM sought to improve on this with a broader distribution to thousands of participants in the space.. I think it's pretty clear now that NEM didn't quite get it right, but I do appreciate the sentiment of inclusive distribution in the New Economy Movement.

What kind of activities do you do for NEM/Symbol?

Life got very busy around 2015, and I largely stepped away from the Crypto space. Over the past year I've started focusing again on Crypto, and with NEM/Symbol I've pitched in with community management & dialogue in Discord, operating a node, writing and sharing a couple node-related scripts, -performed some chain analysis, provided a little input into wallet design, contributed to the official documentation, written a few blog posts, and a handful of other things here and there.

What are your thoughts on NEM/Symbol?

I think NEM started out with the right values, but quickly struggled to execute on them. We gradually shifted away from some of the foundational core values and long-term ambitions that lit the fire for NEM, trading these primarily for short term results. I think the hard forks for NEM and Symbol and the associated change in leadership and direction are a refreshing change in course, and align more closely with some NEM's original intentions of inclusion, innovation, decentralization, and community participation. While some people cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel, I cannot help but see the dead end that we were approaching on our previous path.

Could you give a message to the Japanese community members?

It takes time and patience to build great things. I am no expert in Japanese language and culture, but I believe appropriate words are 我慢 (perseverance) and 生き甲斐 (purpose); these two naturally lend themselves to a third key ingredient, hard work. These are key ingredients for success. I see these key ingredients within the core team and many of our community members, and it is one of the main reasons that I see a bright future for Symbol and NEM. I also feel that these are key strengths in Japanese culture, which is why I believe Japan is a wonderful place for NEM and Symbol to grow.

Hello to all the people gathering and feeling inspiration by the NEM/Symbol blockchain!
My passion on computer software started back in 1987 with my first 512K RAM, 8088 MS/DOS PC.
I remember spending most of my teen years after school saturdays afternoons, trying commands like 'dir' or 'gwbasic' then going out to the arcade playing TAITO Flying Shark.
From 1993 to 1999 I've been a university student in Computer Science and after graduation I started to work as  on computer software industry consultant in Italy for banking / insurance companies. It is interesting to compare those XIX Century years whith today. In late '90, me and my friends discussions were mainly focused on Operating Systems and languages, people divided into factions among Mac OS, MS Windows, Unix, OS/2 and AmigaOS; Pascal vs C vs C++, just like now some maximalist defend their favourite blockchain implementation.
I grew up with HP, DEC Alpha and Sun workstations at the university laboratory, copying all the software we could exchange with friends, in a pirate way, debugging and modifying code or copying source code from textbooks and spending hours trying to fix memory pointers allocation C compiler errors.
When I started to work as employee/consultant it was a different story. They payed the money, but all they asked was to deliver on schedule, and quick fix the bugs, this kills the inspiration and hurts my health, so after 20 year as Java developer, I tack and hoist the gennaker to the public administration.

What kind of activities do you do for NEM/Symbol?

I started the NEM Telegram group for Italian language speakers in 2017.
I managed that group until 2021 when NGL suggested to trasfer ownership to their own admin.
I'm running one NEM and one Symbol validator for the mainnet and one Symbol validator for the testnet.
Because of my Java background I'm experimenting with Symbol Java SDK, and released a Discord Bot under GPL license for NEM and Symbol treasury wallets balance inquiry and checking.
I spend time retweeting NEM/Symbol blockchain tweets along with food, seed and trees activist tweets in hope to raise awareness on blockchain and environment. With some former members of the NEM Telegram Italian group, (Nembit86, Rigel, AngelNEM) we gather each year before Christmas to wishing well.

How did you come to know about NEM/Symbol?

It was in September 2016, I had some experiments to mine coins, like Litecoin.
Mining coins was fascinating because it involves compiling and running processes and join the network but I hadn't enough CPU resources, so I started my due diligence searching information on blockchain projects listed at CoinMarketcap website.
NEM blockchain was on the top 10 so I had time to download the NEM Wallet and started 'harvesting' with few XEM.
Upon great satisfaction with harvesting, I moved to supernode setup, converting all my bitcoins to XEM. These ideas came to my mind in the morning breakfast, befor going to office, that's why I named my XEM validator 'croissant'.

What are your thoughts on NEM/Symbol?

Among the years, NEM is still my favourite blockchain. NEM rest API offered to me the most light learning curve and it is affordable, with clean client/server interaction.
The node server process is very stable, it's a sign of careful memory management during design, also doesn't demand much disk space; the same holds for the Symbol node server process.
As I'm a developer, I'd like to build the server process from sources using the compiler.
The Docker image is great for initial setup but hides pieces. I'm a free software believer, I belive in the four free software rights as explained by Richard Stallman, like the basic right n.0) to control what's running in your device.
I have the feeling NEM/Symbol blockchain embodies these values that bring power to users.
I think it's a mission not to leave  Bitcoin alone, and NEM / Symbol can walk along with it, and NEM / Symbol can do it because it has the comprehensive blockchain technology know-how and controls the source code from the ground up.

How did you come to know about NEM/Symbol?

I learned about NEM from NXT community. I have been involved in NEM since 2014 and was one of NEM’s earliest investors.

What are your thoughts on NEM/Symbol?

The NEM/Symbol Japanese community has been doing very well. So, I have always been full of hope for the future of NEM/Symbol. As an ecosystem, the community should include all users. Therefore, holders and developers should jointly build the community, rather than attack each other because of different positions. Bull market focuses on price, bear market focuses on technology.

Could you give a message to the Japanese community members?

Thank the Japanese community for making great contributions to Symbol. Hope to have more opportunities to communicate and cooperate with Japanese communities.
